Episode 5 - Wide Awake and Dreaming

Annie is officially the understudy for Adrianna for Spring Awakening when this episode of 90210 opens. She’a acting opposite Ty and it’s getting rather passionate on stage.

Later, it gets even more passionate backstage: Harry, Kelly an Ryan are taking a tour of the auditorium when they catch Annie making out with her boy toy. Awkward alert! She later gets a reasonable speech from Debbie about the birds and even the bees.

Meanwhile, Brenda is concerned about Adrianna. She keeps coming in late for rehearsals and appears to be seriously stressing out over pressure from the play and from her parents at home. Despite Ryan’s pleas to interject and confront Adrianna about drug use, Brenda says she can handle it.

But can Annie handle sex with Ty? He tells her he’s booked a room at the fancy hotel where the Spring Awakening after-party is set to take place. As if that’s not enough pressure for this Kansas-native, she’s informed 15 minutes before show time that she’s taking Adrianna’s place as the lead because the A-train is totally strung out.

Through all of this, Naomi is learning that her parents are getting a divorce. But back to the play and the proposed sex after it:

Annie is a hit. She runs into Dixon afterwards and asks for the condom he’s been keeping in his wallet for four years. Really, 90210? Doesn’t every teenager in the world know at this point that condoms go bad when kept in wallets for more than, like, a day? Well, they should know that! Still, Dixon gives Annie the condom…

… and Annie procedes to run into Ethan. In the confusion, Annie drops the condom, Ethan picks it up and we have an awkward alert that’s worthy of capital letters: AWKWARD ALERT! Ethan asks Annie why she doesn’t save herself for someone that cares and she says she tried, it didn’t work. We have two reactions:

How does Ethan know Annie is a virgin?!? She had a boyfriend that she even tried to stay with long distance after the move;
Annie tried to wait for Ethan. For how long? Three days? Were these two ever really that close to becoming an item?

Anyway. At the after-party, Silver kisses Dixon. Hot diggity!

Annie then shows up at the party, but she’s in for a surprise: Adrianna had gotten to Ty’s hotel room first and told Ty and Annie and Ethan were making out after the play. When Annie knocks on the room’s door, Adrianna answers. In a towel. We hear the shower running and Adrianna says Ty is “rinsing off” and she’ll tell him that his “next appointment” is here. Ouch. Cold stuff.

When Annie leaves, Adrianna goes in and turns off the running water. No sign of Ty.

We end the episode with Annie coming home, closing her bedroom door… and melting into tears.

As the opening night of the school play “Spring Awakening” approaches, Ty reveals to Annie his plans for a one-on-one after party in his hotel room with her. Others at school are concerned about how fast Annie and Ty’s relationship is developing. Meanwhile, Naomi won’t accept her parents’ divorce and Adrianna is confronted about a substance abuse problem, giving Annie the chance to play the lead in the musical.

Episode 4 - “The Bubble”

After all the speculation and over analysis of some very vague clues, the mystery of the 90210 babydaddy has been put to rest on this week’s episode. Little Sammy’s dad was the topic of much conversation as Kelly’s new love interest poked and prodded for any info he could get on the mystery man. But the big reveal came in the final moments of the episode during a confrontation between Kelly and Brenda (just like in the good ole days). The argument came to a close with Brenda claiming Kelly was still hung up on Sammy’s father.

This week’s episode started out with news that Annie’s drama teacher was taking an indefinite leave of absence due to a family emergency. But never fear — Grandma Tabitha has stepped up to fill-in and share golden nuggets of acting advice as, “If you’re not breathing from your ass and reaching to the skies, the back of the room won’t hear you.” Love it.

Naomi, who can’t accept that her mom is cool with her father’s trysts with another woman, is forced to take a seemingly happy family photo with her parents (sis Jen will be Photoshoped in later). But despite her anger, her mom tells Naomi it’s simply a fling and, basically, to mind her own.

Back at West Bev, Bren and Kell enjoy a lovely breakfast together at the school cafeteria where Brenda gets a kick out of the fact that she still can remember the days when they were all chanting, “Donna Martin Graduates” (one of my personal favorite 9-0 episodes, mind you). The two chat about Donna’s adorable baby and the fact that Kelly has yet to tell Sammy’s father she’s robbing the cradle dating Ryan.

Meanwhile, Dixon winds up in a fender-bender with his dad’s car, but the crashee does him a “solid” (what the kiddies are calling favors these days) and agrees to let Dixon pay him back without involving insurance so as not to bother his dad.

Between classes, Ryan does a bit more sleuthing into Kelly’s life and learns the daddy is a “do-gooder” who’s currently halfway around the world doing charity work. Naomi bumps into Silver and pleads with her not to blog about her dad’s affair, but Silver won’t give her a straight answer considering Naomi blabbed about her dad’s affair years back. All I could kept thinking was, “Ain’t karma a bitch?”

At rehearsals, Tabitha doesn’t get why the girls can’t just “sing like their privates are on fire,” and her demonstration of what sexual frustration really looks like leaves a beet-red Annie pleading with her dad to give grandma the boot. Harry can’t kick his own mother to the curb, so instead he recruits thespian Brenda upon Kelly’s recommendation. When Tabitha sees herself on tape chastising her granddaughter, she realizes it’s time to step down and let Brenda take the reigns.

Now on a quest to pay off the damage from the car accident, Dixon applies and gets hired at, you guessed it, the Peach Pit. If the connection to Brandon from the original wasn’t blatant enough, Nat even has to go ahead and mention the “good egg” he hired back in the day who also was a teen from West Bev. At least Nat’s upgraded the uniforms.

In the teen love department, Annie is really into Ethan now that he and Naomi are done, and she even blows off Ty (sorry, did she forget he has a private jet?). But just like Silver warned, Ethan stands Annie up to help Naomi confront her dad’s mistress (more to come on that). Annie tries to make-good with Ty now that she sees Ethan is a pipe dream, but Ty, who knows full well he was blown off, does the same to Annie — and he burns her pretty good, too! Ultimately Annie tries to apologize to Ty by baking cookies, but when that doesn’t work, she dives in to give him a kiss (which shockingly enough proves more persuasive than cookies).

Ethan accompanies Naomi on her mission to tell off her father’s lady friend, but learns the shocking news that not only is it more than just a fling, but this harlot is moving into the family’s summer home to boot. It’s only when Naomi delivers this news to her mom that we actually see some form of betrayal in her eyes for the first time.

And then, the moment you’ve all been waiting for — is it Dylan? Brandon? Steve? After learning Ryan spoke to Brenda about Sammy’s dad, Kelly confronts her old friend and the two have it out. Brenda: “You’re still in love with” — wait for it — “Dylan.” And there it is! (If you predicted Dylan in our 90210 babydaddy poll — and most of you did — take a bow.)

So there you have it. Sammy Taylor-McKey (or something like that pending on Kelly’s stance on hyphens). Were you right? Personally I was hoping the dad would be Brandon, but deep down I knew the only one with real “history” was Dylan. How do you feel about the reveal? And the rest of the episode? So far this has been my favorite of the three — and not just because of the big news. I think Tabitha’s hip thrusting “Spring Awakening” performance sealed the deal for me.

Are 90210 starlets too skinny?

It seems like if you’re an actress in Hollywood, you’re either too fat or too skinny.

A couple days ago, EW’s PopWatch reported that The CW asked the younger female stars of 90210 (Shenae Grimes, Jessica Stroup and AnnaLynne McCord) to address their “weight issues.”

Sure, skeletal celebrities are nothing new (and almost seems like a requirement of fame), but even one of the stars of another CW teen drama, Gossip Girl, thinks a line has been crossed. Penn Badgley (Dan) told Popeater.com that he doesn’t like “thin L.A. girls” and hopes “they eat a double cheeseburger or something.”

What do you think: are the 90210 stars too skinny? Should the CW do something more drastic about the situation, especially since this show influences young teen girls?

Or, should everyone just mind their own business when it comes to celebrities’ weight?

90210: It’s Getting Hot in Here—Real Hot!

New 90210 starlet Shenae Grimes is not the prima donna she’s been made out to be in some recent tabloid reports.

So says Jessica Lowndes, who plays troublesome Adrianna.

“It’s ridiculous,” Lowndes (above, right) said at last night’s Teen Vogue Young Hollywood party about the Grimes (above, left) gossip. “None of it’s true. We’re all like a little family. There’s no drama, and everyone’s trying to create drama.”

The drama that Lowndes doesn’t mind is the kind that’s onscreen.

“Oh my God! It gets worse,” Lowndes said of her character. “The drugs just get harder and harder. And starting this Tuesday, my character starts her downfall. It’s pretty crazy. It’s pretty shocking. I definitely think people are going to be shocked.”

Wonder if they’ll be as shocked as they were when, during the series’ premiere episode, Dustin Milligan’s character gets orally serviced by a gal who is not his girlfriend.

Actually, Adam Gregory, who plays Ty Collins, says there’s going to be a lot more where that came from.

“It gets pretty out of control, but I can’t say too much,” Gregory said. “But I will say that it’s provocative, and that’s the way we wanna keep it.”

CW says Doherty’s 90210 adventure might continue

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shannen Doherty has finished filming on CW’s “90210,” but don’t bet that sequel to “Beverly Hills 90210″ has seen the last of Brenda Walsh.

“Shannen signed on for four episodes, which she has shot. It was Shannen’s way of thanking her fans,” said Gary Mantoosh, a spokesman for Doherty. “If the CW comes back with an offer for additional episodes, she’s happy to consider it.”

In a statement Friday, the series said it would “love for her to do more” and there’s “definitely” a possibility that could happen.

In “90210,” Brenda returns to alma mater West Beverly High as a theater success who’s agreed to direct a school musical.

Meanwhile, the show said that Jennie Garth, who played student Kelly Taylor on the original Fox series and is a guidance counselor on “90210,” will add five more episodes to the six she’s already filmed.

The next episode, airing Tuesday, has prompted online buzz among fans: In a conversation between Kelly and Brenda, the father of Kelly’s 4-year-old son is revealed, and it’s someone from her “Beverly Hills 90210″ past.

The actresses, who feuded on and off the set of the original show and hadn’t spoken in years, have said their reunion on the new series went smoothly despite some pre-filming jitters.

Episode 3 - “Lucky Strike”

From TV.com: Harry and Debbie plan a family bowling night, but find their plans interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Annie and Dixon’s friends. Meanwhile, Annie finds herself torn between Ethan and Ty, Naomi experiences a difficult evening with her father, and Kelly and Silver learn that Jackie’s drinking is beginning to spiral out of control.

If last week introduced us to the cast and new faces of 90210, this week showed us that not everything is all sunshine and pretty flowers. This third episode of the series jumped right into the problems some of these new people face. The Wilsons are still trying to settle and adjust to their new lives in Beverly Hills as Kansas meets California. California is fast paced, and the family and their new lives are driving the family apart.

The way to solve this is a forced family night, even if Annie and Dixon have plans with ther friends. Annie has another date with Ty, and Dixon has a screening of that new Bond flick. Yes, that one that isn’t out until November! The kids cancel their plans, but then invite their friends to tag along for family night bowling. Ty comes to pick Annie up for their date, and Ethan even shows up. Yes, that love triangle is definitely forming. You can see that Annie is already torn between the two, especially when Ty bails on her at the bowling alley when she decides to help Naomi instead.

Naomi has her own issues to deal with. Thinking she is heading to Vegas with her father, she is crushed when those plans are canceled. She decides to take her father dinner at the office, and in the process she makes a shocking discovery. Her dad is having an affair. She learns from her mother that it has been happening for two years, and Naomi needs to ignore it. This looks to be something that might be hard for her to do.

Not only does Naomi have issues, so does Silver. At the start of the episode, we see she has been staying at a shelter. Kelly and Aaron’s mother has been once again dealing with drinking problems, and life has become unbearable for Silver. She tries to keep it a secret from everyone until Dixon finds her sleeping in her car, and her forces her to tell his dad. This leads to Kelly knowing, and a confrontation with her mother, who returns for the episode.

Nice to see familiar faces, but both Brenda and Nat were missing this week. As for Kelly, she tells us more about her son, who is the child of someone she dated in high school. Does this mean Dylan is Sam’s father? She doesn’t really say, but she now has a new man in her life. All in all a good episode with a lot happening. Some might say too much, but these episodes are laying the ground work for what is store in the future.

Like any good West Beverly High student, your new “90210″ Show Tracker did her homework and dug up some details about the drama awaiting the denizens of that infamous zip code. So order up a cappuccino from The Pit and ponder the following:

1. The CW previews for tonight’s episode have teased an explosive confrontation between newly minted guidance counselor Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth) and her back off-the-wagon mama (Ann Gillespie) over the well-being of Kelly’s half-sis Silver (Jessica Stroup). The dialogue goes something like this:

Kelly: I’m not gonna sit by and watch you do to her what you did to me!

Mama Taylor: Because your life was so awful.

Me: Stuff like this is exactly what this spin-off needs!!

But mama drama isn’t the only appointment Kelly’s keeping this week. She’ll also go on date No. 2 with the scruffalicious English teacher (Ryan Eggold who, based on the pilot, seems to be the show’s best bet for Breakout Male).

As for the paternity of Kelly’s 4-year-old son Sammy, executive producer Gabe Sachs claims he and fellow show runner Jeff Judah “decided who the dad was a long time ago” and that the burning question will be answered within the next handful of episodes. My heart’s set on Dylan, as he and Kelly rightfully reconnected at Donna’s and David’s wedding at the close of the original “Beverly Hills, 90210″ in 2000. But considering Luke Perry has said he has no interest in appearing on “90210″ 2.0, the safe money would seem to be on Brandon. Jason Priestley’s already copped to wanting to direct an episode and really, how hard would it be for him to step around to the other side of the camera?

2. Tonight’s episode is titled “Lucky Strike” and, sure enough, bowling’s on the agenda when the wholesome Wilson clan — who uprooted from Kansas to Cali after dad Harry (Rob Estes) accepted the West Beverly principal gig — decides to do Family Night. Daughter Annie (Shenae Grimes) is in the midst of a burgeoning love triangle with supposedly dreamy lacrosse stud Ethan (Dustin Milligan) and the sensitive Private Jet Dude (Adam Gregory) so her attentions will likely be elsewhere. Ditto those of Annie’s adopted brother, Dixon (Tristan Wilds), who is about to get his very own love interest. “You might be surprised when you see who it is,” says Sachs, “but it is so the right person.”

3. The bad news first: Shannen Doherty does not appear in a single scene of tonight’s episode. Now, the good news: While the reformed bad girl initially agreed to reprise Brenda for four episodes, “it is definitely a possibility she will do more,” Sachs says. “We love Shannen.” Agreed. Which is why, ahem, she deserves more to do than baby-sitting Kelly’s kid and directing the high school production of “Spring Awakening.”

Which makes you wonder: What would you like to see Brenda do? Assuming Dixon’s love interest is someone we met in last week’s premiere, who do you think it is? And if good ol’ reliable Brandon Walsh is, in fact, Kelly’s baby daddy, why hasn’t he stepped up to take care of his son? Weigh in below.

90210 debuts: The best surprise is no surprise

There weren’t a lot of surprises on the premiere of “90210.”

Who wanted surprises?

A modern-day reprise of the 1990s Fox phenomenon, “Beverly Hills, 90210,” this CW teen drama was kept tightly under wraps before its airing Tuesday night. The network apparently didn’t want to spoil any surprises. As if! “90210″ felt reassuringly familiar, probably even for viewers too young to have seen the series that inspired it.

What higher praise could “90210″ aspire to? It didn’t screw up!

All the expected ingredients were there: gorgeous teens, lots of style and extravagance, raging hormones, and always the potential for backstabbing, broken hearts and payback.

Same old, same old at West Beverly Hills High School.

Annie Wilson and her brother Dixon are the teen transplants to WBHHS this time around, moving to Beverly Hills with their parents not from Minnesota (as with the newcomer family on the original series), but from Kansas. Of course, everybody who cared about the new show had already read all about that.

What viewers might not have known ahead of time: that lovely Shenae Grimes, who plays Annie, squeezes her eyes shut every time she speaks or giggles, in the most adorable way.

They might not have guessed — unless they’re teens or the parents of teens — that texting and video blogs play a vital part in the “90210″ narrative. (Wait a minute: Everybody already knew that from “Gossip Girl.”)

They might not have dared imagine that “Oh my God!” would be uttered with such numbing frequency, or that “stressed to the max” was said by someone with no evidence of irony.

Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth (who played students on the original series) appeared in the premiere, as expected — and seemed surprisingly at home in their respective, grown-up recurring roles.

The most delightful moments of the “90210″ opener were courtesy of Jessica Walter. But this should have been no surprise to any fan of her bygone comedy “Arrested Development,” in which she stole every scene. Here, she plays Tabitha Wilson, the grandmother of Annie and Dixon, a boozy faded actress whose comic outrageousness could put any other character to shame.

“I need to finish my memoirs before my friend Virginia does,” she declares at one point. “We slept with all the same people.”

Annie, Dixon and their parents are now living with Tabitha in her fabulous mansion, as dad Harry (Rob Estes) begins his new job as principal of WBHHS.

In a private moment, he asks his wife (Lori Loughlin) what she thinks of Beverly Hills.

“There’s a lot of temptation,” Debbie replies. “I’m just concerned how it’s gonna affect the kids.”

“You say the word,” Harry promises her, “and I will move us back to Kansas.”

For a show that comes so marvelously free of surprises, that would really be a surprise.
